The Faculty of Arts and Sciences established a Department of Architectural Sciences in 1938. In ca. 1954, the Faculty appointed a Standing Committee on Practice of the Visual Arts, and with the opening of the Carpenter Center in 1963 a Program of Visual Studies emerged under the aegis of the Committee.
